On the banks of the Rufiji River the Selous Impala Camp offers excellent game viewing.

Selous Impala Camp

Set amongst Borassus palms and Tamarind trees the Selous Impala Camp provides superb comfort, wonderful wildife and dining under the stars beside the rippling Rufiji river. On arrival the camp manager will talk to you about what you would like to do and see and arrange game and boat safaris to suit your wishes. Flexibility is the key. Maasai Askaris will escort you to your tent. There you can make yourself comfortable and perhaps view animals and birds from the veranda.

The camp has only eight tents, a large and comfortable thatched low-slung building with wide verandahs and a relaxed open plan area with a well stocked bar, dining room and plenty of planters' chairs and sofas where you can observe the river and banks for game with a drink in hand.

Freshly prepared food is served under the stars and special bush dinners are available on request. There is a raised fireplace area near the bar and restaurant, where you can enjoy a sundowner in the evening.

A sheltered, crystal clear blue swimming pool overlooks the Rufiji.  Just the thing after returning from a game drive in the heat of the day. You don't really need to leave the camp to have an exciting safari! Its pleasant to stay on your veranda with a pair of binoculars and look out over the river or lagoon, or spot our resident hippo.

One of the most appreciated characteristics of the Selous is the lack of vehicle on its roads. Guests often experience hours travelling about the Reserve without seeing any other vehicles.  Full day drives usually starts after breakfast at the camp and includes a bush lunch. Guests can enjoy a long drive in the wilderness coming back to the camp at sunset.  Half day activities are advisable in the wet season when the heat of the day can become too heavy; or for those people who think that 8/9 hours in a car is a little bit too much. Leaving the camp early in the morning have a full breakfast outside in the bush under a nice shady tree. You will be back at the camp for lunch and there will be time after that for a rest, or a plunge in the pool.

Six Open Land Rovers are kitted out especially for photographic safaris and can accommodate a maximum of 6 people in addition to the driver and guide occupying the front seat. There are two rows of seats for the guests, and generally (except for family groups who want to be together) we would only put up to 4 people – one at each “window”.

Boat safaris offer a unique experience to see the wildlife from a different point of view. Hippos and crocodiles, together with the hundreds of different species of colourful birds, will escort you while you quietly move on the waters of the enormous river or the beautiful lakes that form this incredible ecosystem. And sometimes you might have a nice surprise to find in front of you elephants swimming in the water!

Walking safaris are usually early morning or late afternoon, for coolness. Morning walks usually finish with a full breakfast in the bush. From here you can decide whether to continue with a game drive or a boat safari, and for the more fit you can even walk back to the camp. For the safety of all our guests all the walking safaris are conducted accompanied by our own senior guide with a rifle.

Fishing and flycamping are on offer from the camp at an additional charge.
