Ol Doinyo LengaiThe Maasai's 'Mountain of God'Overlooking Lake Natron and the great plains of Kenya to the north, Ol Donyo Lengai (known as the ‘Mountain of God’ to Maasai people) is an active volcano and one of Tanzania’s most spectacular mountains. Due to its remote location and lack of nearby facilities, few people attempt the hike to the summit – making this an undiscovered gem. Most travellers prefer to view its symmetrical cone from a distance. A Walk to the SummitThe rewards for those attempting the hike are huge – the chance to see bubbling lava in one of the smaller cones on the summit crater; a walk along a volcanic ash trail – much akin to a ‘moonscape’; and a memorable view of a near perfect crater rim. The view from the rim, west, over the Ngorongoro Highlands, and out to the Serengeti in the distance, rivals that of any in Tanzania on a cloud-free morning. Longer TreksAnother option (for walkers with more time and looking for an offbeat experience) is to plan a longer trekking itinerary through the Ngorongoro Highlands, offering a chance to acclimatise to the climate – perhaps before an ascent of Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro.
