Remains of Ancient Settlement

Possibly the oldest settlement south of Lamu, Ras Mukumbuu stands at the tip of a long peninsula to the north of Chake Chake creek.  This ancient settlement is thought to have been one of the largest trading cities on the East African coast during the 13th and 14th centuries, and mentioned in the writings of an Arab geographer of that time Yakut Abdulla al Rumi.  Archeologists have also uncovered the remnants of a 10th century mosque, suggesting a much earlier settlement.

The area is overgrown, but visitors are able to make out the remains of what was once the largest mosque in Pemba, with soaring celing supported by pillars.  Also of interest are several tombs which were decorated with porcelain and evidence of early trade networks with China. The ruins are accessible by bike or on foot, but most visitors arrive by boat before heading off to nearby Misali Island.
