Lake Victoria
By far the largest lake in Africa, Lake Victoria’s fishing industries and rich agricultural land around its shores have made the area an important economic centre of Tanzania. Although fishing is a traditional mainstay of the region, coffee and cotton production are increasing the economic importance of the area, especially in and around Mwanza. Trade with neighbouring Uganda to the east and Kenya to the north means that the ports on Lake Victoria are always bustling with activity.
For travellers that make it to the shores of Lake Victoria, attractions include trips to Rubondo Island National Park. The lake is home to some spectacular varieties of freshwater tropical fish, the shores of the lake are peaceful and pristine, offering a quiet and relaxing alternative to the thrills of a safari holiday. Bird-watching and fishing trips make popular excursions.
The shoreline around Speke Bay offers a variety of relaxing pursuits organised by Speke Bay Lodge, with dug-out canoe excursions and mountain biking popular options.
